半年遅れで
プリンスのベスト・アルバム『アルティメイト・ベスト』がリリースされましたよ。
ワーナー時代の音源を完全網羅した2枚組。
1枚目がシングル曲集で、2枚目がリミックスやレア音源。
「ラズベリー・ベレー」の12インチB面に収録されていた隠れ名曲「シーズ・オールウェイズ・イン・マイ・ヘア」なども入っていて、なかなか聴きごたえありんす。
実は僕がライナーを書いています。
プリンスのライナーを書けるというのは非常に喜ばしいことであったわけですが、しかし、ちょっとした裏話もあったりするのだ。
ライナーを書き上げたのが2月ごろ。
発売が楽しみだなーとか思っていたある日、メーカーのディレクターから電話があったわけです。
「すみません、あのアルバムなんですけど、発売中止になりました」
「えッ、な、なぜ」
「わかりません。とにかくプリンスがダメ出ししたんで。本人に言われたら絶対に出せないんで、せっかく書いていただいたのに申しわけないですが……」
となれば、これはもうどうしようもないわけで。
アーティストだもんな。プリンスだもんな。
ところが、先月ぐらいに「発売できることになりました！」との電話。
「えッ、ど、どうしてですか？」
「わかりません。とにかくプリンスがOK出してきたんで。本人が承諾したらもう大丈夫なんで……」
半年前と今とで、プリンスの中のなにが変わったのか？
なにはともあれ、ひと安心です。
いまも聴いてますが、やっぱ何度聴いても捨て曲ないねー。
