ジャッキー・マクリーン作品中、僕がいちばん好きなのは
先週、サックス・プレイヤーのジャッキー・マクリーンが亡くなったことに少なからず寂しさのようなものを感じていたため、ここ2,3日は仕事中に彼の作品を何枚か聴いていました。
初リーダー作品の『Jackie Mclean Quintet』にはじまり、『Destination Out 』とか『Let Freedom Ring』とか『Jackie's Bag』とか。
これは熱烈な褒め言葉なんだけど、彼のサックスの「どう転がっても一流にはなりきれない感じ」がとても好きでした。そこにジャズを感じるというか。
でも、数ある彼の演奏中、僕がいちばん好きなのはやっぱりこれだな。
ビリー・ホリデイの死の直前までの2年間、伴奏者として行動をともにしたマル・ウォルドロンが、彼女への追悼の意を込めて発表した名作『Left Alone』。
同じ意見の持ち主は少なくないと思うけど、このなかの、タイトル曲だけに参加したマクリーンのプレイがもう絶妙の味わいなわけです。
そんなわけで、このアルバムのA面ばかりを何度もかけ続けています。
