雨の夜には、しみったれたバラードを
夜になって雨が降ってきた。
雷も鳴ったりして、精神構造が単純な僕はそれだけでドキドキしたりしたのだが、雷が去ってからは一転してうすらサビシイ気分になってきた。
こういうときは、ソウル・バラードが最高ですよ。
というわけで棚から引っぱり出したのは、'67年に出たウィリアム・ベルのファースト・アルバム『The Soul Of A Bell』。
スタックス・レーベルの代表的サザン．ソウル・シンガーで、このアルバムは前半がバラード、後半がジャンプ・ナンバーという風変わりな構成。
「You’re Such A Sweet Thang (LP Version)」とか「Any Other Way 」など、ブッカー・T＆MG'sの演奏がかっこよすぎる後半の展開ももちろん悪くないんだけど、個人的には前半のバラードが大好きだ。
ファースト・シングルの「You Don’t Miss Your Water」を筆頭に「Do Right Woman - Do Right Man」、「I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now) 」、それから「Nothing Takes The Place Of You」あたりのしみったれた雰囲気にはたまらないものがあります。
ギミックに頼らず、純粋に歌い上げるスタイルもいいっすね。
