なんとなく夏の音
もうすぐ出るUB40の最新作『Who You Fighting For』から、何曲かをちょろっと聴いた。
さりげなく、でも芯が通っていて、やっぱりいいですね。
衝撃的だった『Signing Off』とか、「Red Red Wine」を生んだ『labour of Love』とか、UB40に好きなアルバムは多い。
スライ＆ロビーやマイティ・ダイアモンズなどの御大と共演した『Fathers of Reggae』もよく聴いたな。このアルバムに関しては、なんとなく夏の音という感じがした。
で、UB40が持つ「夏の音」の部分で、需要な位置を占めているのがベースラインだと僕は思っている。
もちろん、アリ・キャンベルの甘いヴォーカルだって魅力的。
でもそれだって、安定感があって、それでいて硬くて、とても気持ちがいいアール・ファルコナーのベースあってこそ引き立つと思えるからだ。
今回のハイライト・トラックはマンハッタンズのカヴァー「Kiss And Say Goodbye」。
この曲にも、同じことを感じた。
